I don’t Believe in Cameras

September 21, 2009

I don’t believe in Camera’s, never have, and probably never will.  I appreciate photography; I love it in fact, it’s more that realization that photography is one medium I will never master.

Cameras capture moments, ideas, thoughts, and feelings among other things.  But there is a difference between photography and girls who just like to bring cameras everywhere. The same girl’s who post 600 photo’s each Sunday.  Every smile, every spilt drink and every toilet hugging waste case.  Each moment of there evening stolen for all to see on facebook.

I have been on trips to France, Dominican, Cuba and obviously the States.  I have never once brought a camera on any of the above-mentioned trips.   I suppose I’ve always had a pretty good memory and would rather remember the moment and the feeling as opposed to the ‘picture frame’.   Besides with technology these days it’s easy to just say, “Hey can you email me some of those”.

That said; every facebook photo of me is one that I have been tagged in.  Consequently I am usually drunk or high on something which leaves my eyes strayed and face looking like some god dam awful paparazzi picture one would suspect to have Perez Hilton draw all over.

Maybe I should start carrying a camera, this way the image captured would always be one I could censor first.  Yet, I don’t care; I will always be seen through the camera of some long lost friend who I happened to bump into one night, never my own.

Jess Petrella, Ottawa native and photographer has been creating ever since she could get her hands on a camera. Currently attending Algonquin Collegiate Institute for Interactive Multimedia design, she aspires to soon be hired in the visual industry.
When asked about her creations Petrella states,

“It’s just how I express my thoughts, but in a visual sort of way. I take pictures of anything that catches my eye day to day. I do it for myself really not to impress anyone else, but I like to share it with the world. I’m greatly influenced by mother nature, empty space, and the quiet”.

With obvious clear-cut talent and a growing fan base, you will definitely be seeing a lot more of Petrella’s creations. A vast collection of pieces are comprised in her portfolio, some of which you can view exclusively at
